"Elijah" depicts the biblical prophet's ascent to heaven in a chariot of fire — two rearing horses in fiery orange surge upward while a white-robed Elijah rises among them, and a kneeling Elisha reaches upward from below. This is one of twelve prints from The Prophets portfolio, created in 1973 as a homage to Israel's 25th Anniversary, with text by Dr. Haim Gamzu, Director of the Tel Aviv Museum, printed by Mourlot in Paris, and published by Transworld Art. The theme of Elijah's chariot of fire was one of Rubin's most revisited subjects — he also depicted it in stained glass windows at Israel's Presidential Palace in Jerusalem in 1969, and in oil paintings from 1970–71.
Rubin was a Romanian-born Israeli painter who lived from 1893–1974 and is celebrated as a pioneer of the Israeli art world. He won the Israel Prize in 1973. His works are held in major collections internationally.
